What is Overlay Filler

An overlay filler is a slim trim piece installed along the side of a cabinet to conceal the gap between the cabinet box and the wall or adjacent cabinet. It’s commonly used with frameless and full‑overlay cabinetry, where the door covers nearly the entire front and leaves a small, visible side gap. Overlay fillers create clean, finished transitions that make the cabinetry look more precise and built‑in rather than leaving raw edges exposed.

Overlay fillers help standardize the cabinet appearance by hiding inconsistent gaps caused by imperfect wall conditions or slight misalignments during installation. Made from the same material as the cabinet or door (such as wood, laminate, or thermofoil), they blend seamlessly while adding a small but important visual upgrade. Installers typically match the width and finish of the filler to the cabinet front, so the cabinet appears as one continuous, closed unit from front to side.
